CHAPTER 12
MELODY
âI think Iâll do my normal cheeseburger,â I tell Steph. There are about five or six different meals I order here. At least for dinner or lunch time. Iâm a creature of habit. Once I like something, I tend to eat it over and over again.
âYou want your normal salad or the mozzarella one?â she asks.
âMozzarella please.â
âYou have mozzarella salad?â Frank asks, flipping the menu to the other side. I think itâs been the same menu for the past ten years, so he probably knows it by heart.
âItâs not on the menu. We have the stuff to make it, so Mark makes it special for Melody.â Steph nods her head toward the kitchen window, where you can see Mark cooking in the back. Frank furrows his eyebrows for a second. I swear he almost looks jealous of Mark making me a special salad. Which is ridiculous since Mark is three times my age.
âIâll just have whatever sheâs having.â He hands Steph the menu.
âYou want the burger the same way too?â she asks.
âYeah.â
âAll right.â She takes my menu next.
âYou donât have to eat what I eat, Biscuit. It doesnât bother me. You should get whatever you want.â
âIf weâre going to live together, I should get used to eating how you eat,â he rebuffs.
âI donât always have to eat perfectly. I have mealtime insulin if I want to splurge, but Iâm kind of used to eating what I eat at this point.â
âWhat exactly is a Mozzarella salad?â
âJust sliced tomatoes, mozzarella, and some balsamic dressing.â Itâs simple but yummy.
âAnd a burger is okay?â His brows pull together, and I can tell heâs really thinking this all over. I have the feeling heâs going to be googling the hell out of this.
âI get it with no bun.â
âRight.â He nods. âAnd your blood type?â I snort a laugh. Frank scowls at me.
âIâm A positive, but Iâm fine, Frank. Iâm probably in better health than most people in this diner. Type 1 diabetes isnât a death sentence if you take care of yourself. Itâs just a lifestyle change that you have to get used to.â
âI hate that I didnât know about this.â From his tone, I canât tell if heâs irritated with me or himself. âI should have responded to your letters.â My heart melts at that. The man really is battling himself when it comes to me. As much as it annoys me, itâs endearing too.
âI wouldnât have told you even if you had responded to my letters. You had enough to worry about. There is no way I wouldâve added to that. That wasnât the purpose of my letters.â
âIs there anything else I should know? Something else youâre keeping from me?â I think for a second but donât come up with anything significant. I shake my head no. âThere has to be.â
âI have this.â I dig through my purse and pull out a nose spray. âIf I ever pass out, you shoot it up my nose.â
âDo you pass out a lot?!â His eyes widen.
